The Story Behind KMS

This is the story behind the creation of KMS our Mission & Vision. Do you think Hospital Management Systems (HMS) in a rich country like Australia or the USA will meet the needs of a country like Indonesia or Nigeria? We do not. In a rich country disparate systems have evolved over many years, are very complex, very costly and there is a huge focus on interoperability. The costliest implementation we have heard of is the Department of Veteran’s affairs in the USA, US$14 Billion and climbing. In Australia, a 100-bed hospital might have annual revenues of $40M and in Indonesia $4M. One 10th as much! It stands to reason that the Indonesian hospital cannot afford the same software! Nor does it want or need it. With its limited budget it has other priorities in deciding how to service the needs of its patients, medical community, and its owners.

At Ksatria Medical Systems we decided to build a Hospital Management and Clinic System to suit the needs of developing economies. We have built all the same basic functionality, but we have prioritised low price over complexity. We have created an end-to-end system integrating all points of care and avoided the need for complex interoperability with some exceptions. We integrate (interoperate) to well serviced domains like LIS, RIS, General Ledgers and of course to Government Systems where we can connect our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to the Governments Electronic Health Record (EHR).

How did we go about this? How did we learn what detailed functionality is required to run a clinic or hospital? How did we develop it?

What we did was to purchase an old but functionally rich system (developed over many years by Mitrais Indonesia’s leading software development company) and then rewrite it prioritising the functionality most used by the users. We have used the latest software and data base technology; all open source and low cost, frontend: Angular, backend: Spring Boot and database: PostgreSQL and OS Linux. All known for their functionality, security, and low cost.

We believe in the cloud and that it can simplify IT support requirements, so our system is cloud based. However, we also know there are places where the internet is not always perfect – so our software works in both the cloud and on premise!

We know that software implementations can be tricky an expensive, so we have built our software to be easy to implement!

We know that money for capital expenditure can sometimes be hard to find so we offer subscription payments from operating expenditure!

In some country more than one language may be spoken in the hospital so we can use two languages at the same time! One of which is always English so we can provide support wherever you are in the world and whatever language is used in your hospital!
